RRB Group D: Entry-Level Railway Career After Class 10

The recruitment process which is popularly called RRB Group D is now officially advertised as Level-1 Recruitment under 7th CPC Pay Matrix. Currently going on recruitment is CEN 09/2025 and the centralized employment notification for this was issued by RRB in the month of January 2026.

Educational Qualification

For Level-1 recruitment, the candidate needs to have 10th/Matriculation or ITI qualification as mentioned against the relevant post in the notification. It is always necessary that candidates must verify their post-wise qualification as the eligibility may vary based on the notified post parameters.

Salary

The initial basic pay for the Level-1 posts is ₹18,000 per month in the 7th CPC Pay Matrix. This will be more when allowance like DA, HRA, and others are added to this basic pay, which are deducted separately from the salary.

Group D/Level-1 Selection Process

The stages of recruitment are:

  • Computer Based Test

  • Efficiency Test (PET)

  • Document Verification

  • Medical Examination

This stage is very crucial because the Level-1 positions require physically rigorous activities at railways. Short-listed candidates on the basis of Computer Based Test have to fulfill the physical eligibility criteria before proceeding to document verification and medical examination.

Hence, it is very well suited for those candidates who are interested in getting into the railways after class 10/ ITI and are ready for practical work.

RRB ALP: Technical Railway Career with Strong Growth Potential

An ALP is Assistant loco pilot, it's a technical and safety related job in railways. The newly issued CEN 01/2026 shows vacancies for ALP 11,127 in Pay level 2 with minimum basic of 19,900. Age is 18-30 years as July 1, 2026 (as applicable to norms).

RRB ALP Educational Qualifications

Educational qualifications as per one of the prescribed criteria:

  • Matriculation/SSLC + ITI in prescribed trades from NCVT/SCVT; or

  • Matriculation/SSLC + Completion of prescribed Act Apprenticeship in the prescribed trades; or

  • Prescribed 3-year diploma in Mechanical/Electrical/Electronics/Automobile engineering, including prescribed combinations; or

  • Engineering qualification as per the notification.

Selection Process

ALP recruitment is more specific than that of NTPC and Level-1. The process is as follows:

CBT 1 -> CBT 2 -> CBAT -> Document Verification -> Medical Examination

CBT 1 is a screening test. CBT 2 consists of Part A and Part B, with Part B as qualifying. After this, the Candidate needs to pass the Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT). In case of 2026 ALP Recruitment, the final merit will be calculated 50% from CBT 2 Part A and 50% from CBAT as per prescribed criteria.

ALP also has strict medical criteria due to the fact that the candidates are responsible for rail operations.

Career Growth in Railway Sarkari Jobs

In case of NTPC, promotion for the employees depends upon the cadre and post. Promotion for the employees is possible through the relevant process of promotion, selection, and departments. The station master and other operation posts help an individual get into more supervisory roles.

In the case of Level-1, promotion depends upon the department and railway service rules relevant to the department. It must be noted that joining a particular role at Level-1 does not mean that the individual will stay in the same entry-level role during the entire career.

In the case of ALP, the career of an employee is technical and operation based. Based on experience and departmental promotion, an individual gets into more operation roles and even higher loco pilot posts.

Conclusion

Railway Sarkari Jobs give job options according to their educational qualifications and follow the salary structure of the 7th CPC Pay Matrix. RRB NTPC proves to be a very good option for candidates who are looking for a job as a clerk, commercial, and operational staff; Level-1/Group D offers job options to those who fulfill the required 10th or ITI qualifications; and ALP for technically qualified candidates.
